Mount Vesuvius is one of the most well-known and studied volcanoes in the world for its structure, its eruptive history, and its position, being situated in a densely populated area a few kilometers from the city of Naples.
The current volcano structure is the result of the union of an older external cone, Mount Somma, and a younger internal cone, Vesuvius, formed as a result of violent eruptions. The two cones are separated by a depression called Valle del Gigante which is itself subdivided into the Atrio del Cavallo to the west and the Valle dell’ Inferno to the east.

De Vesuvius is een actieve vulkaan aan de westkust van Italië ten zuidoosten van Napels. De naam "Vesuvius" is afkomstig van het Oskisch"fesf", wat rook betekent. De vulkaan ligt in de vlakte van Campanië, heeft een doorsnede van acht kilometer en is meter hoog.
De Vesuvius is een stratovulkaan; strato- is afgeleid van stratum, Latijn voor 'laag'. Een stratovulkaan bestaat uit een afwisseling van lagen as en lava, die in de twee stadia van een uitbarsting van dit type vulkaan worden gevormd. De Vesuvius ligt in de caldera van een oudere vulkaan, de Monte Somma. De caldera is ongeveer jaar geleden gevormd.[1] Een vulkaan in een caldera wordt ook wel sommavulkaan genoemd.
In het jaar 79 kwam de Vesuvius tot uitbarsting, waarbij de Romeinse steden Pompeï, Herculaneum, Oplontis en andere nederzettingen werden verwoest. Tijdens de uitbarsting werd een wolk van stenen, as en vulkanische gassen tot wel 30 km in de lucht geworpen.[2] De omgeving werd bedolven onder enorme hoeveelheden pyroclastisch materiaal. | Vervoer | Met de auto: De krater van de vulkaan ligt op 22 kilometer afstand van het centrum van Napels. Op ruim 1 kilometer afstand van het ticketkantoor van de Vesuvius is het mogelijk uw auto te parkeren en er is een tweede parkeerplek op ' meter hoogte' vanwaar ook pendelbussen vertrekken.
