Folkhälsan (suom. kirjaimellisesti 'Kansanterveys', täydelliseltä nimeltään Samfundet Folkhälsan i Svenska Finland r.f.) on vuonna perustettu sosiaali- ja terveysalan palveluja tuottava ja tutkimusta harjoittava yleishyödyllinen yhteisö.[1]
Folkhälsanin edeltäjä oli yksityinen Florinin komitea (Florinska Kommissionen), jonka nimi muutettiin vuonna muotoon Samfundet Folkhälsan i Svenska Finland.
Toiminta
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Folkhälsan pyrkii edistämään ihmisten terveyttä ja elämänlaatua Suomen ruotsinkielisillä alueilla, mutta sillä on myös monikulttuurillinen integrointi, esimerkiksi mentorointiohjelmaa Helsingissä.[2] Folkhälsan on toisaalta kansalaisjärjestö, toisaalta se on kohderyhmälleen merkittävä sosiaali- ja terveyspalvelujen tuottaja muun muassa lastensuojelun, lasten päivähoidon, nuorisotyön, palveluasumisen ja kuntoutuksen saralla.[3] Folkhälsan on Vapaaehtoisen pelastus

Samfundet Folkhälsan, or in short Folkhälsan (literally "Public Health"), is a non-governmental organization based in Finland. It is active in advocating social welfare and health care for the Swedish speakers of Finland. The organization carries out scientific research and informs and counsels in order to promote health and good quality of life. Folkhälsan’s activities include assistance, support, education, and care, being present at every stage of life. Founded in , Folkhälsan employs today approximately 1, people. Our local associations across Swedish-speaking Finland have almost 19, members. Folkhälsan works towards a society where health and quality of life are central concerns.
The organization was founded in by Ossian Schauman and a number of other doctors who wanted to reduce child mortality and cases of tuberculosis in Finland. The NGO was combining practical work with research already from the very start.

Folkhälsan Välfärd Ab is responsible for Folkhälsan's service production in Uusimaa, Turunmaa ja Ostrobothnia and in some language islands in other areas. Our activities include daycare centers, after-school activities, summer camps, services for the elderly, therapies and assesments, rehabilitation, services for people with disabilities, support for families, children's homes and family shelters.
Folkhälsan Välfärd employs persons and a significant number of temporary staff. Our strenght is the way we treat people: we see the individual in every person that we work with. We know that a person by themself, with the right support and service, can make a good life for themselves, even in vulnerable situations. The starting point for all our work is a health-enhancing frame of thought and it is based o current research insights.

Research
Folkhälsan Research is divided into two programmes: genetics research and public health research.
The genetics research programme looks particularly into a number of rare conditions; hereditary and other risk factors of diabetes; overweight and obesity; as well as diabetes complications.
The public health research programme focuses primarily on health-promoting aspects; on health, diseases and conditions from the life cycle perspective; on cardiovascular epidemiology; as well as on social gerontology.
Education
Folkhälsan’s education activities range from sports to vocational education, adult education, public education, and workshop activities.
